Manchester City to Face Chelsea In The Third Round Of The FA Cup

Manchester City have been drawn at home to Chelsea in the third round of the FA Cup.

The tie against their Premier League rivals will be played at the Etihad over the weekend of the 6/9 January. The draw took place on BBC2 tonight at Anfield with former England defender Mark Wright and ex-Lioness Rachel Brown-Finnis drawing the balls.

Manchester City most recently lifted the famous trophy in 2019 and have been semi-finalists for the past three seasons. They have already met the Stamford Bridge side in the Carabao Cup this season, recording a 2-0 win over Graham Potter‘s side earlier this month. The the tie will come hard on the heels of the Premier League clash between the two which will take place at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, January 5.

Man City have also played against Chelsea twice in the FA Cup semi-finals in the past decade in which Chelsea have won 1-0 in 2021 and City recorded a 2-1 win at Wembley in 2013 while the Londoners beat the Cityzens in a fifth round tie back in 2016.

In the English FA Cup, the two teams played a total of 4 games before, of which Chelsea won 2, Manchester City won 2 and the two teams drew 0. In the most recent FA Cup clash, Hakim Ziyech‘s second-half goal for Chelsea booked a spot for them in the final of the Emirates FA Cup, as they beat Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. However, Manchester City‘s recent 2-1 win against the Stanford Bridge side in the Carabao Cup will surely be something to build on as they search for a win.
