Khusanov Celebrates as Uzbekistan Qualify for World Cup Debut

Abdukodir Khusanov and the entire nation of Uzbekistan are in celebration after securing a place in the FIFA World Cup for the very first time in their history.

The Manchester City defender delivered a typically disciplined and determined performance as Uzbekistan held the United Arab Emirates to a 0-0 draw, earning the crucial point required to book their place in next summer’s tournament.

Still just 21 years old, Khusanov showed composure and leadership at the heart of Uzbekistan’s back three in a game that was tense and tight throughout.

With few clear-cut chances created at the Al-Nahyan Stadium, the UAE found no way through a resolute Uzbek defense as Timur Kapadze’s men stuck firmly to their strategy.

Uzbekistan entered the match knowing that avoiding defeat would be enough to confirm qualification. Despite late pressure from the hosts, the Uzbek side stood firm, surviving eight minutes of stoppage time before the referee signaled the final whistle.

Although the UAE managed six shots on target, none found the net, and the final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation among Uzbek players, coaching staff, and supporters. Celebrations erupted not only in the stadium but across Tashkent, where fans are expected to rejoice late into the night.

Uzbekistan now join group leaders Iran in advancing to the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They are among just eight teams to have secured qualification so far.

This achievement marks the end of a 27-year journey for Uzbekistan, who began their World Cup pursuit in 1998 and have experienced several agonizing near-misses along the way.

Nicknamed ‘The White Wolves’, they will conclude their qualifying group campaign with a home match against Qatar on June 10 in Tashkent.

Everyone at Manchester City extends heartfelt congratulations to Abdukodir Khusanov and the Uzbek national team on this landmark achievement for the country’s footballing history.
