Manchester City are on the verge of completing the signing of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan, with the Dutch midfielder set to undergo a medical on Sunday before finalising a move to the Etihad Stadium.
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman revealed that City had reached out to him several months ago to discuss Reijnders as part of their preparation to reshape their midfield. While Koeman didn’t confirm whether Pep Guardiola or other key City figures contacted him directly, he confirmed conversations took place.
Reijnders, who has 22 international caps, will sign a five-year contract with City after a £46.3 million deal was agreed with Milan, making him the club’s first signing of the summer window.
The 26-year-old is expected to feature in the Netherlands’ World Cup qualifier against Finland on Saturday before flying to Manchester on Sunday for his medical. He will then return to the Dutch squad ahead of Tuesday’s match against Malta in Groningen.
The timing of the transfer is crucial, as it ensures Reijnders can be officially registered before the deadline for squads competing in the Club World Cup.
Koeman also shared that he had recommended other Dutch players to City, though Reijnders appears to be the primary target for now.
“This is a fantastic move for him,” Koeman said. “City contacted me months ago. I suggested others as well, but they’ve focused on Tijjani. He’s made impressive progress.”
Cody Gakpo, who plays alongside Reijnders for the Netherlands and for Liverpool in the Premier League, also supported the move. “He’s shown his quality at Milan. Now he’ll have the chance at Manchester City,” said Gakpo. “I’m confident he’ll succeed—though I hope not too much!”
