Maresca Explains Why Elliot Anderson Is a Manager’s Dream at Manchester City

Enzo Maresca believes Elliot Anderson possesses the qualities every manager wants in a player, praising the midfielder’s intelligence, willingness to learn and determination to improve as he continues to make an impressive start at Manchester City.

Since arriving at the Etihad, the England international has quickly established himself as an important part of Maresca’s plans. His consistency and performances have also helped him win over City supporters, with the manager highlighting an attitude that makes him particularly valuable to the team.

Asked whether Anderson’s rapid adaptation had surprised him, Maresca explained that the midfielder’s approach to training and learning had made his progress easier to understand.

“Knowing him now, no,” the City boss said. “He’s a guy who wants to learn every day.

“We start with him on the video, he wants to understand, learn and improve – which for a manager is a dream because you know he wants to learn and do different things.”

Maresca also recalled his first conversations with Anderson, revealing that they immediately discussed the midfielder’s position and responsibilities.

The Italian was already familiar with Anderson’s ability, having followed his development at Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, as well as facing him during his time at Chelsea.

He believes the midfielder’s football intelligence is one of the qualities that sets him apart.

“I knew him from Newcastle where he struggled a little bit, then Forest. And I faced him with Chelsea different times,” Maresca added.

“I know how good he is.”

A return to Nottingham Forest

Anderson’s next appearance could carry extra significance, with City travelling to Nottingham Forest this weekend for his first meeting with his former club since leaving the City Ground.

The midfielder remains highly regarded by Forest supporters following his contribution during his time there, and Maresca hopes he receives a positive reception.

The manager, however, stressed that the fixture carries importance for the entire City squad rather than just one individual.

“It’s big game for Elliot but for all of us, all the games are important,” he said.

Maresca acknowledged that footballers have personal connections and emotions, but insisted Anderson’s main contribution remains his performances for City.

He also expressed hope that Forest fans would recognise what the midfielder brought to their club.

Maresca still exploring Anderson’s midfield potential

While Anderson has largely operated as City’s holding midfielder, Maresca believes there is considerably more to his game.

The midfielder recently provided an assist for Erling Haaland in the Champions League, showing the quality he can offer when moving forward. His ability to influence play in different areas gives Maresca several tactical possibilities to consider.

However, the City manager says finding the right midfield combination is a question of balance, with several players competing for roles depending on the opposition and match plan.

Alongside Anderson, Maresca has options including Ayyoub, Enzo Fernández, Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki and Mateo Kovačić.

For now, Anderson’s responsibilities are primarily defensive, but the manager has not ruled out giving him a more advanced role as he becomes increasingly familiar with the team’s demands.

“At this moment Elliot plays as the holding midfielder, but in future I have no doubt he can play a little bit more in front,” Maresca explained.

The City boss also revealed that he has been working closely with Anderson to improve his understanding of different situations on the pitch.

“We started together three or four months ago, and he can do many things,” he said.

“We had a conversation before the last Champions League game, we had a nice conversation on understanding the game and he’s slowly getting better and better.”

Maresca’s comments underline the growing importance of Anderson to his Manchester City project. His immediate impact has already been significant, but the manager clearly believes the midfielder has further levels to reach as he continues adapting to the demands of his new team.
