Aguero: Manchester City Among Top Contenders for FIFA Club World Cup

Aguero - Manchester City Among Top Contenders for FIFA Club World Cup

Club legend Sergio Aguero believes that Manchester City must be considered one of the leading contenders for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, thanks to their consistent dominance under Pep Guardiola.

The newly expanded tournament will feature 32 teams competing across June and July, with City placed in Group G alongside Wydad AC (Morocco), Al Ain (UAE), and Juventus (Italy). The top two teams will progress to the knockout phase.

Matches will be streamed live and free on DAZN in most regions, with fans only needing to register for an account to watch.

Aguero Confident in Guardiola’s Squad

Speaking to FIFA in anticipation of the tournament, Aguero expressed high hopes for his former club:

“City are always among the favourites. Their mentality sets them apart, and that’s something Pep Guardiola has instilled in them over time,” Aguero said.

He emphasized Guardiola’s unwavering philosophy:

“Pep never changes his playing style, regardless of the result. That consistency is part of why they are so successful. He has a group of incredibly talented players – a dream team – and he knows exactly how to lead them.”

Backing South American Sides Too

As Argentina’s former international and City’s all-time leading scorer, Aguero also voiced support for clubs from his home continent. This year’s Club World Cup includes six South American teams – four from Brazil and two from Argentina.

“This tournament gives South American teams the chance to showcase their passion and competitive spirit,” he explained. “We’re known for our fighting mentality, and I expect our clubs to give it everything to reach the latter stages.”

He added that participation alone is valuable, but advancing deep into the competition would be a matter of pride for the continent:

“It won’t be an easy road, but I know South American clubs will give their all and aim to leave with their heads held high.”
