Haaland Cleared for Aston Villa Clash as Maresca Waits on Three City Stars

Erling Haaland is fully available for Manchester City’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa, but Enzo Maresca will make a late assessment on three other players ahead of Saturday’s trip to Villa Park.

The Norwegian striker was rested during City’s 5-1 Champions League victory over AEK Athens on Tuesday, remaining on the bench as his team-mates delivered an impressive attacking performance. Maresca has now confirmed that Haaland is ready to return, offering City a major boost as they look to maintain their perfect start to the league campaign.

Nico O’Reilly, Mateo Kovačić and Matheus Nunes remain in doubt, with their availability dependent on how they respond during the team’s latest training session.

City travel to Birmingham having won all seven of their opening Premier League matches, sitting three points clear at the top of the table. However, Maresca knows his side faces a demanding test against an Aston Villa team that has been producing strong results of its own.

Haaland Ready to Return

Haaland has been one of City’s most influential players this season, scoring 12 goals before the Villa fixture. His decision to leave the striker out of the starting line-up against AEK Athens gave him an opportunity to rest during a busy run of matches.

With another important domestic encounter approaching, Haaland’s confirmed availability gives Maresca the option of restoring his leading goalscorer to the starting eleven.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the City manager explained that the situation was more straightforward for Haaland than for the three players still being monitored.

“Erling is the only one 100% available. And the other three we need to wait for today’s session,” Maresca said.

The confirmation will be encouraging for City supporters, particularly given Haaland’s scoring record and his importance to the team’s attacking approach. His movement, physical presence and finishing provide a consistent threat against opposing defences.

However, Haaland’s availability does not automatically confirm that he will start. Maresca must still decide how best to manage his squad as City continue balancing Premier League, Champions League and domestic cup commitments.

Three Players Face Late Fitness Checks

While Haaland is ready, uncertainty remains over O’Reilly, Kovačić and Nunes.

None of the three featured in Tuesday’s victory over AEK Athens, and Maresca indicated that their situations had improved ahead of the latest training session.

“We have a session this afternoon – all of them can be available or not,” he explained.

“In terms of [those] still in doubt, yesterday they were all improving and we will this afternoon.”

The session will give City’s medical and coaching staff an opportunity to assess whether the players are ready to return to competitive action.

Their potential availability would provide Maresca with additional options as he considers his team selection for a match likely to demand intensity and discipline in midfield and defence.

With City facing a difficult opponent away from home, the manager will be keen to avoid taking unnecessary risks with players who are not fully ready.

City Aim to Extend Perfect Premier League Start

City’s seven victories from seven league matches have given them an excellent start to the season and placed them three points clear at the summit.

The squad’s confidence has also been reinforced by their emphatic European win over AEK Athens, in which Phil Foden scored a hat-trick and Elliot Anderson and Rayan Cherki also found the net.

Despite the positive results, Maresca is determined to keep his players focused on the next challenge rather than allowing their early success to create complacency.

“The mood is very good,” the manager said.

“We are happy with our start but we are more hungry for more wins. We’re happy at the moment but want more.”

That hunger will be important as City enter a demanding stretch of fixtures. Maintaining consistency across several competitions requires not only quality on the pitch but also careful management of fitness, rotation and the demands placed on key players.

Maresca also played down any suggestion that the early league standings could determine the eventual title contenders.

With only seven matches completed, he believes there is still too much football remaining to draw firm conclusions about the race.

“It’s too early [to say teams are not in the title race]. Seven games, there are many games to go. It’s too early,” he said.

Maresca Expects a Tough Test Against Villa

Aston Villa will provide a significant examination of City’s unbeaten run, with Unai Emery’s side arriving in positive form after a 3-1 victory over Viking in the Champions League.

Villa have gone seven matches without defeat and have demonstrated the ability to compete across domestic and European competitions. Their intensity without the ball and clear tactical organisation are among the qualities Maresca expects his team to confront.

The City manager also made his admiration for Emery clear, praising the work the Villa boss has done throughout his managerial career.

“I have huge respect for Unai,” Maresca said. “He has done well in all of his clubs he has been and he is fantastic manager.”

He added that Villa’s playing identity was easy to recognise and warned that their r
