Maresca Explains What Could Make Cherki One of Europe’s Best

Enzo Maresca believes Rayan Cherki has the ability to rank among Europe’s finest players, but insists Manchester City must find him in the right areas to get the most out of his attacking talent.

The French playmaker has made an impressive start to his second season in England, recording six goals and two assists across his first 11 appearances in all competitions. His recent performances have strengthened his influence in City’s attack, including a memorable finish against AEK Athens in Tuesday’s 5-1 Champions League victory.

Cherki has also caught the eye with his display against Liverpool earlier this month, producing another goal that highlighted his ability to create moments of individual brilliance. For Maresca, however, the key to unlocking the midfielder’s full potential is not simply giving him freedom on the ball, but ensuring he occupies positions where his creativity can hurt opponents most.

Maresca Identifies Cherki’s Most Dangerous Position

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Maresca explained why Cherki becomes particularly influential when he receives the ball between the opposition’s defensive and midfield lines.

The City manager believes the 23-year-old can cause significant problems when he operates in these spaces, where he can turn quickly, combine with team-mates and create opportunities close to goal.

“Rayan in this moment is one of the best players in Europe when he is in the right position,” Maresca said.

“When we are able to find him between the lines, he is always dangerous. The goal the other night and at Liverpool are quite similar.”

Maresca’s comments underline the tactical importance of Cherki’s positioning. By remaining high enough to receive passes in advanced areas, the midfielder can become a direct threat rather than having to repeatedly drop deeper to get involved in possession.

The manager recognises that Cherki naturally enjoys moving around the pitch and being involved in the build-up. However, he wants the Frenchman to strike a balance between his instinct to seek the ball and the need to remain available in positions that offer the greatest attacking reward.

“He loves the ball and to move a lot so a lot of the time he is out of that position,” Maresca explained.

“In terms of numbers, goals and assists, he’s doing fantastic. In the right position, he is so important.”

Freedom and Structure Must Work Together

One of Cherki’s biggest strengths is his ability to produce unexpected solutions in tight spaces. His close control, vision and willingness to attempt difficult passes make him an unpredictable opponent for defenders.

Maresca is not looking to remove those qualities from the midfielder’s game. Instead, he wants City to develop a system that gives Cherki the freedom to express himself while maintaining the structure needed to make the team effective.

“This is something he needs to keep, he loves the ball and I’m not going to remove from his game. We need to find the right balance,” the Italian added.

That balance will be particularly important against opponents who defend compactly and attempt to deny City space in central areas. Cherki’s ability to receive between the lines could provide a route through those defensive blocks, especially when supported by forward runs from City’s other attacking players.

His growing goal contribution also suggests that he is becoming more than a creative outlet. With six goals and two assists already recorded in his opening 11 appearances, Cherki is contributing directly to the team’s attacking output while continuing to develop his understanding of Maresca’s demands.

Maresca Wants Cherki to Keep Things Simple

Despite praising Cherki’s flair, Maresca also emphasised the importance of making effective decisions in the final third.

The City manager understands why technically gifted players sometimes attempt ambitious passes or elaborate moves, particularly when they have the ability to make them work. Nevertheless, he believes simple decisions can often be the most effective way to create and convert chances.

“I like when the players are happy but I also like the simple things. The most difficult thing is to do the easy things,” Maresca said.

He acknowledged that Cherki’s natural ability sometimes encourages him to complicate situations, but made clear that he appreciates the player’s willingness to express himself.

“I am happy when he does that because I know he’s happy. And he’s creating chances so it’s even better.”

The message is not a demand for Cherki to abandon his creativity. Rather, Maresca wants him to recognise when a moment calls for individual skill and when a straightforward pass or movement will benefit the team more.

If City can combine Cherki’s imagination with greater consistency in his positioning and decision-making, the midfielder could become an even more influential figure in their attack.

City’s Attacking Power Comes With a Defensive Challenge

Cherki’s development comes as City continue to produce impressive attacking numbers. They had scored 33 goals in 11 matches across the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup at the time of Maresca’s press conference.

That output reflects the team’s ability to create chances and threaten opponents in several ways. However, the manager believes the next step is to ensure their attacking success is matched by greater defensive control.

“We need to find the right balance between scoring and conceding,” Maresca said.

“We are scoring many goals but I’m sure we can improve that. It is a good number but there is always something we can do better.”

The Italian explained that regularly scoring four or five goals demonstrates City’s capacity to create opportunities, but he wants his players to reduce the number of chances they allow opponents to convert.

“Scoring a lot means you create a lot. Most of the games when we score four or five we create more and we create a lot. Now we have to try to reduce the goals that we concede,” he added.

Finding that balance will be an important part of City’s progress as the season develops. Cherki can help by providing creativity and goals, but his positioning must also fit into the team’s wider tactical structure.

Aston Villa Provide the Next Test

City travel to Aston Villa on Saturday looking to carry their recent attacking momentum into another demanding Premier League fixture.

Cherki’s form gives Maresca another valuable option in the final third, particularly if City can consistently find him in the spaces where he can turn and attack the opposition defence.

The manager’s assessment is clear: Cherki already possesses the technical ability to trouble the strongest teams, and his early-season numbers demonstrate his growing contribution.

The challenge is to make that influence more consistent by combining freedom with positional discipline. If City can find the right formula, Cherki’s creativity could become an even greater asset as Maresca’s side pursue their ambitions across all competitions.
