PSG Beat Manchester City 4-2 as Haaland Brace Fails to Stop Champions League Comeback

Paris Saint-Germain claimed a thrilling 4-2 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, recovering from a second-half fightback to secure their second consecutive win in the UEFA Champions League League Phase.

The European champions produced a devastating first-half display, scoring three times through Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha to take firm control of the contest.

Manchester City responded after the break, with Erling Haaland scoring twice to revive hopes of a comeback. However, Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG’s two-goal advantage, ensuring the visitors left Manchester with all three points.

The defeat ended City’s eight-match unbeaten run, while PSG moved to six points from their opening two Champions League fixtures.

PSG Strike Twice in Quick Succession

Manchester City made a promising start at the Etihad Stadium, attempting to put the visitors under pressure. However, PSG gradually found their rhythm and punished the hosts with two goals in the space of two minutes.

Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing a rapid attacking move with a low effort from the edge of the penalty area.

The visitors struck again in the 15th minute when Ousmane Dembélé headed home a cross from Doué, doubling PSG’s advantage and leaving City with an immediate challenge.

PSG continued to threaten as the first half progressed. Achraf Hakimi came close to adding a third when his effort struck the inside of the post, while City struggled to contain the visitors’ movement and attacking combinations.

Vitinha eventually made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute, finishing a well-worked move after Warren Zaïre-Emery’s clever backheel created the opportunity.

City attempted to respond before half-time, with Joško Gvardiol heading narrowly wide and Jérémy Doku forcing a save from goalkeeper Matvei Safonov. However, PSG went into the break with a commanding three-goal lead.

Haaland Leads City’s Second-Half Response

City manager Enzo Maresca made three substitutions at half-time as the hosts looked to change the momentum of the match.

The adjustments brought greater urgency to City’s play, with the home side pressing higher and creating more opportunities in the attacking third.

Antoine Semenyo saw an effort deflected wide after Haaland helped create the chance, while Enzo Fernández came close with a header.

City eventually reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute. Iliman Ndiaye helped stretch the PSG defence before delivering a cross that Haaland turned into the net, giving the hosts renewed hope.

The goal lifted the atmosphere inside the Etihad, and City continued to push forward in search of another.

However, PSG struck again against the run of play in the 62nd minute. Akliouche found the net with a long-range effort to make it 4-1, dealing a major blow to City’s comeback ambitions.

The hosts refused to give up. Gvardiol had a header cleared off the line, Fernández struck the corner of the post and crossbar, and Haaland also came close before finding the net again in the 75th minute.

The Norwegian completed his brace after finishing Ayyoub Bouaddi’s low cross, reducing the deficit to 4-2 and setting up a tense final period.

City continued to attack, but PSG held on to secure an important away victory.

Donnarumma Saves Late Penalty

PSG had goalkeeper Matvei Safonov to thank for several important interventions during City’s second-half pressure.

One of the decisive moments arrived late in the match when PSG were awarded a penalty in the 88th minute after Nuno Mendes was brought down by Nunes.

Ferran Torres stepped up, but former PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the late spot-kick, denying City another opportunity to make the closing stages even more dramatic.

The save helped PSG protect their advantage and see out a memorable victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Maresca: City Deserved More

Despite the defeat, Maresca believed his team’s second-half performance merited a better outcome.

Speaking after the match, the Manchester City manager said: “I think we started quite good until we conceded the first goal. And then we conceded the second and that created a bad feeling. Second half we were much much better and maybe deserved something even more.”

Maresca explained that conceding twice in quick succession had made the contest more difficult for his side.

He added: “It was a bit strange to be honest. We started good until the first goal and then one minute later another.”

The City manager also praised the response after the break, saying the team had created enough opportunities to earn more from the match. He acknowledged, however, that his players needed to be more clinical and avoid losing their balance defensively.

Guéhi Admits City Needed to Improve

Defender Marc Guéhi also expressed disappointment with City’s first-half performance, taking responsibility for his role in the goals conceded.

“First half we need to do a lot better myself included for the first two goals. They were a bit more aggressive,” Guéhi said in his post-match reaction.

He felt the second half showed a different side of City, with improved aggression and a greater willingness to compete for individual duels.

Guéhi also praised the supporters for continuing to back the team despite the difficult result, adding that City would need to learn from the defeat and deliver stronger performances in future matches. <

Manchester City Dominate Possession but PSG Take the Points

The statistics highlighted the contrast between City’s attacking pressure and PSG’s ability to make the most of key opportunities.

Manchester City finished with 54 per cent possession, compared with PSG’s 46 per cent. The hosts also recorded 27 shots to the visitors’ 15 and won 11 corners, while PSG managed two.

City registered an expected-goals figure of 2.57, compared with PSG’s 1.83, according to the official matchday statistics.

Despite those numbers, PSG proved more effective at crucial moments, establishing a three-goal lead in the first half and responding to City’s comeback with Akliouche’s decisive strike.

Haaland Makes Champions League History

Haaland’s brace provided a personal milestone on a difficult evening for Manchester City.

The club’s official matchday commentary confirmed that the striker had become City’s record goalscorer in the Champions League, with 61 goals in 60 appearances in the competition for the clubs he has represented, including Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund.

His two goals against PSG took his Manchester City total to 172 goals in 207 appearances, further underlining his importance to the team’s attack

PSG Strengthen Their Position in the League Phase

The victory gives PSG six points from their first two Champions League matches, following their opening win against Slovan Bratislava.

For Manchester City, the result provides an early setback in the League Phase and a reminder of the cost of defensive lapses against elite European opposition.

City showed considerable character after the interval and created enough chances to make the final stages uncomfortable for PSG. However, the visitors’ clinical first-half display and ability to withstand the late pressure proved decisive.

PSG leave Manchester with a statement victory, while City must now regroup and turn their attention to their upcoming fixtures as they look to recover from their first defeat in eight matches.
