Guardiola Reflects on City’s 3-1 Champions League Win Over Club Brugge

Manchester City booked their place in the UEFA Champions League Play-off round with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Club Brugge at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. Despite falling behind just before halftime, City mounted an impressive second-half comeback, led by Mateo Kovacic and Savinho, to seal the win.

Guardiola’s Reaction: “We Had Nothing to Lose”

Speaking after the match, Pep Guardiola acknowledged the pressure his team faced and joked about the pre-match fire incident outside the stadium, which briefly delayed kick-off.

“When I saw the fire before the game, at half-time I thought the journalists have the headline already. We were out.”

Trailing at halftime, Guardiola emphasized the shift in mentality that drove City’s second-half turnaround.

“When you are out, you play with nothing to lose. We go forward. The first half was so dynamic but we missed the spark.”

City came alive in the second half, with Savinho making an instant impact off the bench, winning multiple corners and creating opportunities. Guardiola praised the Brazilian for changing the game.

“Savinho helped us like all the season when he plays there. He was unbelievable. He changed the game and after five or ten minutes had won two or three corners. Our crowd reacted, and we had the chances.”

Acknowledging Brugge’s Challenge

Guardiola admitted that Brugge had more chances in the second half as City threw numbers forward in search of goals.

“The way we played that way, Brugge had more chances in the second half than the first. In the first half, when they were so tight and defended with man-to-man marking, we needed the quality, the spark, the one player to make the individual action to score, and we missed it. Maybe we felt the pressure.”

Despite the tension, Guardiola highlighted how being behind actually freed the team from fear.

“Sometimes you are winning 2-0, you are scared to lose. When you are 1-0 down and out of the Champions League, you have nothing to lose. In the right moments, we found the goals.”

Looking Ahead: Play-off Round Challenges Await

With City now through to the Champions League Play-off Round, Guardiola is confident his squad will be stronger in two weeks as players return from injury and new signings settle in.

“It has been a really tough group stage, but we did it, we are there. In two weeks we will be better than we are now because players will be back and we will have the new signings. We will play one of two giants. We’ll see what happens and how we arrive.”
