Foden: City Eager to Make Club World Cup History

Phil Foden has expressed Manchester City’s determination to make history as they prepare for the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

City will compete among 32 elite clubs in the United States this summer, aiming to become the first-ever winners of the revamped tournament. The competition begins on 18 June, with City drawn in Group G alongside Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Al Ain FC (UAE), and Juventus (Italy). The top two teams from the group will advance to the knockout rounds.

The entire tournament will be available live and free on DAZN in most countries — all fans need is a free registered account to tune in.

Foden: “We Want to Make History”

Speaking to FIFA ahead of the tournament, Foden highlighted the team’s hunger for success and the excitement of potentially becoming the first champions under the new Club World Cup format.

Some of the lads and I have talked about how special it would be to be the first team to lift the new trophy,” said Foden. “That’s our clear goal.”

“With the talent and quality in our squad, we’re confident we can compete at the highest level.”

Foden also looked forward to the challenge of facing top teams from around the world, saying:

It’s all about testing ourselves against the best, playing in new stadiums, and experiencing different atmospheres.”

“These are the kinds of moments you live for as a footballer – to challenge yourself in unfamiliar scenarios and environments.”

Familiar Territory for City

City are no strangers to playing in the United States, having completed successful pre-season tours there in both 2022 and 2024. They will play their three Group G matches across three U.S. cities:

  • June 18 vs. Wydad AC – Philadelphia (17:00 UK)
  • June 22 vs. Al Ain FC – Atlanta (02:00 UK)
  • June 26 vs. Juventus – Orlando (20:00 UK)

Foden Excited for U.S. Fans

Foden also shared his excitement about reconnecting with City’s American fanbase:

It’s great for our fans in the U.S. because it’s tough for them to travel to Manchester to watch us live,” he said.

“Now they’ll get the chance to see us in action up close, and hopefully, we can deliver a great performance and secure a win for them.”

With high expectations and a strong squad, Manchester City aim to make a memorable impact at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
