Guardiola Rules Out Rodri and Stones from Starting Line-Up Against Al Ain

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that both Rodri and John Stones will not start Manchester City’s upcoming FIFA Club World Cup Group G clash against Al Ain in Atlanta.

City head into Monday’s match knowing that victory will secure early qualification for the Round of 16 following their 2-0 win over Wydad AC. Rodri made a brief appearance in that game, while Stones remained an unused substitute.

Both players are recovering from long-term injuries that sidelined them for significant parts of the 2024/25 season. Rodri recently returned from a serious knee injury, while Stones has not featured since February.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Guardiola provided updates on their progress. “Rodri is improving but we have to be careful. His injury was serious and requires up to a year to fully recover. If he can play 20 to 30 minutes again, that’s a positive step.”

On Stones, Guardiola expressed his hopes for a full recovery. “We just want John to regain fitness and consistency. He’s incredibly gifted and we’ve shared many moments since arriving together in 2016. Training has been positive so far, but matches demand a different level.”

Guardiola concluded by emphasizing the importance of patience as both players work their way back to peak condition.
