Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has categorically ruled out deploying Kevin De Bruyne in the defensive midfield position. Despite the challenges City has faced in filling the No.6 role following Rodri’s injury, Guardiola insists that De Bruyne’s strengths lie elsewhere.
Speaking ahead of City’s FA Cup third-round clash against Salford City, Guardiola made it clear that the Belgian international is more valuable in attacking positions.

“Kevin cannot play there,” Guardiola said. “I’ve been nine years with him, and I know his attributes better than anyone else.
“He can drop deeper when needed, but Kevin has another talent. We need his energy up front. He is unbelievable in the final third, and I want him there, leading that position.”
Defensive Midfield Dilemma
City has struggled to find a suitable replacement for Rodri in the anchoring role since his injury against Arsenal. While several players have been tested in the position, Guardiola emphasized the specialized nature of the role and the need for defensive discipline—qualities that don’t align with De Bruyne’s natural game.

Guardiola also addressed questions about Gary Neville, part-owner of League Two side Salford City and a prominent football pundit.
When asked about Neville’s opinions as a pundit, Guardiola expressed respect for his work, even when he doesn’t always agree.

“Sometimes, yes, of course,” Guardiola said when asked if he listens to Neville’s analysis.
“Sometimes after a game, I listen. It’s their job to be occasionally controversial—it’s normal, otherwise, it’s boring.
“I usually agree with what they say about the game. But it’s not a big problem if I disagree. My job is here; theirs is there. Last year, they said good things; this season, bad. That’s how it is everywhere.”
