Post-Match Reactions: Maresca, Dias and Emery Speak Out

Maresca: City Were Not Clinical Enough

Enzo Maresca felt Manchester City had done enough to take something from Villa Park, but admitted that their failure to convert opportunities proved costly.

City enjoyed 63 per cent possession, recorded 53 touches inside Villa’s penalty area and registered seven shots on target. Despite those attacking numbers, they left Birmingham empty-handed.

“I think we deserved more from the game for the amount of chances that we created and for the chances we conceded,” Maresca said after the match.

The City manager identified finishing as a key area for improvement, explaining that his players needed greater accuracy in the final third.

“We lost because we probably are not being clinical enough in their box,” he added.

Maresca also acknowledged that City could have defended the situations leading to Villa’s goals more effectively. Both strikes exposed the visitors during transitions, with Jackson taking full advantage of the opportunities presented to him.

The Italian nevertheless insisted that the team could learn from the defeat and move forward rather than allow one disappointing result to undo their encouraging start.

Rúben Dias: “Not Our Day”

City captain Rúben Dias shared his manager’s frustration, pointing to Villa’s effectiveness and the visitors’ inability to make their attacking pressure count.

Dias acknowledged that City needed time to adjust to Villa’s approach during the opening stages, but believed his team responded well and created opportunities to get a result.

“Frustrating, felt like we fought a lot,” the defender said.

He also highlighted the importance of responding positively after setbacks, particularly because Villa’s winning goal arrived shortly after Haaland had equalised.

“The second one was tough because it was very close to our equaliser,” Dias explained.

Despite the disappointment, the City captain praised his teammates for continuing to push until the final whistle.

“I felt like we were dangerous on many occasions, even if the finish wasn’t there we arrived in dangerous places but not able to play. A word of appreciation to the boys because we kept fighting to the end.”

His comments reflected the central frustration of City’s afternoon: they generated attacking pressure but could not find the finishing touch needed to turn that effort into points.

Emery Celebrates a “Fantastic” Day for Villa

While City were left to reflect on missed opportunities, Unai Emery had every reason to celebrate.

The Aston Villa manager described the result as a special moment for his team and supporters, praising the atmosphere at Villa Park and the players’ commitment to the game plan.

“A fantastic day to share with our supporters in Villa Park,” Emery said.

He also highlighted how his players reacted after Haaland brought City level. Rather than losing their composure, Villa continued to follow their approach and found the decisive goal through Jackson.

“We responded very well and kept calm after their goal,” Emery explained.

“We continued in our game plan, scoring the goal we scored. It was fantastic because we were feeling good.”

The victory represented an important home success for Villa and demonstrated their ability to compete with one of the Premier League’s leading sides.

For Emery, the performance was evidence of the attitude, hard work and tactical discipline he wants his team to maintain throughout the campaign.

The Takeaway: City Must Turn Chances Into Points

The reactions from both benches captured the difference between the two sides at Villa Park.

City had extended spells of possession and created several dangerous opportunities, but Villa were more decisive when their chances arrived. Jackson’s brace ultimately outweighed Haaland’s equaliser.

Maresca’s challenge now is to address the defensive mistakes and improve City’s efficiency in front of goal. Dias, meanwhile, has stressed the need for the team to respond, while Emery will hope his players can carry their confidence into the next fixture.

City’s winning streak is over, but the response to their first Premier League defeat of the season could prove just as important as the seven victories that came before it.
