Late Heartbreak for Man City Women as United Snatch Derby Draw

Khadija “Bunny” Shaw looked to have secured another Manchester City victory, but Elisabeth Terland’s late equaliser denied the WSL champions all three points in a dramatic 1–1 derby draw.

Manchester City Women’s perfect start to the Women’s Super League season came to an end on Sunday after Manchester United fought back to claim a point in a tense Manchester derby.

Andrée Jeglertz’s side appeared destined to continue their winning run when Shaw broke the deadlock in the 66th minute at the Progress With Unity Stadium. However, United refused to surrender, with Elisabeth Terland striking late to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

The result was a frustrating outcome for City, who had worked hard to find a breakthrough and looked capable of extending their advantage after taking the lead. Instead, they were left to reflect on a missed opportunity to maintain their position at the top of the table.

City Start Brightly as Both Sides Search for Control

The derby began with plenty of intensity, as both teams looked to establish control in a contest where local pride and league position were at stake.

Lauren Hemp offered City a dangerous outlet down the left, testing United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce with an early effort. Aoba Fujino also threatened, sending a powerful attempt narrowly wide as the visitors began to find their rhythm.

United, however, grew into the contest and showed they were capable of causing problems of their own.

Terland struggled to get the required connection on an opportunity inside the penalty area, while Ella Toone and Jess Park also threatened the City goal. Park, facing her former club, looked particularly dangerous when she found space to attack.

City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita was called upon to keep United at bay, and the hosts finished the first half with encouragement after creating several promising openings.

Despite the attacking moments at both ends, neither side could find the breakthrough before the interval.

United Turn Up the Pressure After Half-Time

The second half continued in a similar pattern, with United looking to take advantage of their home support while City searched for the space needed to unlock the defence.

Terland had two opportunities in quick succession, including a one-on-one situation against Yamashita, but the City goalkeeper stood firm.

Park then came agonisingly close to opening the scoring when her powerful effort from distance clipped the crossbar.

City were also dangerous, with Shaw continuing to battle against United captain Maya Le Tissier and the home defence. The striker eventually found a way through, delivering the decisive moment that appeared to put the visitors in control.

Bunny Shaw Delivers on Her 100th WSL Appearance

With 66 minutes played, City finally broke the deadlock through Shaw.

The forward received the ball from Mary Fowler inside the penalty area, used her strength and movement to create the necessary space, then unleashed a powerful right-footed finish beyond Tullis-Joyce.

It was a significant moment for Shaw, who was making her 100th appearance in the Women’s Super League.

Her goal rewarded City’s persistence and placed the defending champions within touching distance of another victory. For a period after the breakthrough, the visitors looked comfortable and began to limit United’s opportunities to build attacks.

City even had chances to put the result beyond doubt. Shaw went close to scoring again, while Grace Clinton was unable to convert a promising opportunity against her former club.

Those missed chances would ultimately prove costly.

Terland Punishes City in the Closing Stages

United continued to push forward, refusing to accept defeat in front of their supporters.

With the match approaching its conclusion, the hosts found the equaliser their persistence had threatened to produce.

In the 89th minute, United captain Le Tissier delivered a high ball into the penalty area. Shaw attempted to deal with the danger, but her defensive header dropped invitingly for Terland.

The Norwegian forward reacted quickly, striking the ball first time and sending it into the net to spark celebrations among the home crowd.

For City, it was a painful moment. Having worked hard to take the lead, they were unable to protect it until the final whistle.

The late goal ensured the points were shared and gave United a valuable result against their city rivals.

What the Result Means for the WSL Table

The draw ended City’s perfect league record after six consecutive victories at the start of the campaign.

Although the champions remained level on 19 points with Chelsea, the London side moved ahead on goal difference following their 3–1 win over Crystal Palace. City therefore dropped to second place, while United moved to 11 points.

For Jeglertz’s team, the result represents a reminder that maintaining a title challenge requires concentration throughout the full 90 minutes. City had the lead and opportunities to extend it, but United’s late response prevented them from taking maximum points.

United, meanwhile, will take confidence from the performance. Their ability to recover after falling behind demonstrated resilience and gave them a result against one of the league’s strongest sides.

City Must Regroup Ahead of a Busy Schedule

There will be little time for City to dwell on the disappointment, with their attention turning to the next stage of a demanding campaign.

The team will need to assess what went wrong in the closing stages, particularly how United were able to create the situation that led to Terland’s equaliser.

Shaw’s goal was a positive highlight, and City showed stretches of attacking quality throughout the match. However, their inability to turn promising opportunities into a decisive second goal ultimately left the door open for their rivals.

The derby draw is not a disaster for the defending champions, but it does provide a reminder of the fine margins involved in a title race.

City leave Leigh with a point rather than three, while United celebrate a late equaliser that has added another dramatic chapter to the Manchester derby rivalry.
