Here are some interesting facts, trivia, and quotes about our new Algerian defender:
1. From the French Capital
Rayan Ait-Nouri was born in Montreuil, a suburb just a few miles east of central Paris. He spent his childhood in Fontenay-sous-Bois.
He began his football journey with AS Val de Fontenay at the age of eight and later joined ASF Le Perreux 94 in 2012. Initially playing as a central attacking midfielder (No.10), he transitioned to left-back around the age of 12, where he felt his pace and dribbling were better suited.
After time at Paris FC, he joined Angers and progressed through their academy, eventually making the senior squad at 17.

2. Debut Against the Best
Rayan made his professional debut in August 2018 for Angers in a high-profile match against Paris Saint-Germain, facing off against Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.
“It was an unforgettable moment,” he recalled. “All the sacrifices I made as a kid paid off. My family watching me on TV, especially my mother, was very emotional.”
At 19, he moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan during the 2020/21 season. He remained at Molineux for four more seasons before making the switch to Manchester City.
Learning English was tough at first, but he remained determined. “Speaking to English teammates helped me improve. I try not to use French in the dressing room,” he said. “I push myself to keep learning.”
4. Inspired by Marcelo
Real Madrid legend Marcelo was his football idol growing up. “Marcelo is the best left-back of our era. Very technical and skilful with the ball,” Ait-Nouri said.
His biggest real-life inspirations, though, were his father and brother, who supported him throughout his youth career.
5. Standout Season
In the 2024/25 season, Rayan had an exceptional run with Wolves, playing 37 league games—more than any teammate—while contributing five goals and seven assists, both career highs.
“Personal stats matter less to me,” he said. “What’s important is helping the team. I give everything for the club, the coach, and the fans.”
6. Staying Grounded
Regardless of performance, Rayan keeps a level head. “Whether I play well or not, I stay the same. After a game, I try to disconnect and talk to my family. It helps clear my mind.”
7. Embracing His Roots
In January 2023, Ait-Nouri chose to represent Algeria at the senior level. He made his debut against Niger and later featured in the Africa Cup of Nations squad.
“Algeria is part of who I am. We spoke Arabic at home, and going back felt amazing,” he said. “The people are so welcoming—it lifts your spirit.”
8. Proud to Represent Algeria
Rayan is proud to follow players like Riyad Mahrez and Ali Benarbia in representing Algeria. “A lot of us grew up in the same areas near Paris. We share similar stories. The national team feels like a family—it’s something you have to live to understand.”
