Navigating Scrutiny with Determination

“I get scrutinised, but it gives me the fire to keep going. I’ve had a lot of criticism from the Man City fans about being captain, and [how results] are all my fault. But we’re a team, in a team game, and if I wanted to play a solo sport then I’d go and play tennis or golf,” said Kyle Walker.

Accepting the Captain’s Burden

“I feel that being the most experienced, or one of the most experienced players, and the captain, I’m going to have to take that burden [and] just carry it on my shoulders. I say to the lads in the huddle, we’re here [at the Club World Cup] because we went and achieved what we achieved, but no one’s going to roll the red carpet out for us,” he added.

Resilience Amid Football’s Short Memories

“I’ve got a mum and dad that care about me, and when their son is getting hammered… do you know what I mean? I just feel that in football, you’ve got short memories. I remember going home in the car and Jeremy [Doku’s] coming [and is] on fire. All of a sudden, Jack Grealish should be out. Now all of a sudden, Jack Grealish scores and, you know, it’s keep him in the club,” said Kyle Walker.

Motivation in the Face of Criticism

“It is what it is, but that gives me motivation. Keep hammering me and I’ll just keep coming back,” Kyle Walker concluded.
