Manchester City suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season after Nicolas Jackson struck twice to give Aston Villa a 2–1 victory at Villa Park.
Manchester City’s impressive winning streak came to an end on Saturday as Aston Villa delivered a clinical performance to claim all three points in a 2–1 Premier League victory.
Enzo Maresca’s side arrived in Birmingham hoping to make it eight consecutive league wins, but Unai Emery’s team had other plans. Nicolas Jackson proved the difference, scoring in both halves to punish City at crucial moments.
Erling Haaland found the net to bring the visitors level after the break, yet Jackson’s second goal restored Villa’s advantage and left City searching unsuccessfully for another equaliser.
Despite enjoying the greater share of possession and creating several promising opportunities, City could not find a way past Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki for a second time.
Jackson Strikes Early to Put Villa Ahead
City’s afternoon began in disappointing fashion when Villa capitalised on an error during the visitors’ attempt to build from the back.
In the sixth minute, Marc Guéhi’s heavy touch allowed John McGinn to move the ball into Jackson’s path. The Villa forward took advantage of the opening, cutting inside Elliot Anderson before finishing past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The early goal gave Emery’s men the perfect platform to frustrate City, who responded by pushing forward in search of an immediate equaliser.
Iliman Ndiaye tested Suzuki with a dangerous effort, while Rayan Cherki also forced the Villa goalkeeper into action. Ndiaye came particularly close when his shot struck the foot of the post, leaving City wondering how they had failed to score.
Villa’s defensive organisation and Suzuki’s interventions ensured the hosts carried their advantage into half-time.
Haaland Restores Parity but City Cannot Hold On
Maresca introduced Rico Lewis and Phil Foden at the interval as City attempted to increase their attacking threat.
The changes helped the visitors continue their search for a breakthrough, and Haaland eventually delivered in the 52nd minute.

Ndiaye supplied the cross, and the Norwegian striker rose to head the ball beyond Suzuki, bringing City level and giving the travelling supporters renewed belief.
At that stage, City appeared capable of completing the comeback. The visitors continued to attack, and Suzuki produced another important intervention to push Josko Gvardiol’s effort onto the crossbar.
However, the momentum shifted again just minutes later.
Jackson Delivers the Decisive Blow
Villa regained the lead in the 60th minute through Jackson, who completed his brace with a first-time finish from inside the penalty area.
Substitute Ibrahim Mbaye made an immediate impact after coming on, driving forward down the right before delivering the ball into Jackson’s path.
The striker connected with the cross, and his effort found its way past Donnarumma to make it 2–1.
It was a significant moment in a contest where City had worked hard to recover from their early setback. Having finally drawn level, they were once again forced to chase the game.
City pushed forward during the closing stages, with Haaland among those looking for another goal. Villa, however, defended their advantage with determination, and Ian Maatsen cleared a late Haaland header off the goal line.
The hosts held on to secure a valuable victory in front of their home supporters.
City Had the Ball but Villa Had the Goals
The final statistics illustrated City’s frustration. Maresca’s side recorded 64 per cent possession and registered 15 shots, seven of which were on target. Villa managed eight attempts, with two finding the target.
Yet the visitors’ territorial advantage did not translate into enough goals to take anything from the match.
Suzuki played a major role in Villa’s success, making several saves to deny City’s attackers and helping his team withstand sustained pressure.
For Villa, Jackson’s finishing proved decisive. His two goals ensured that the home side made the most of its opportunities, while City were left to reflect on missed chances and costly defensive moments.
What the Result Means for Manchester City
The defeat brought City’s run of seven consecutive Premier League victories to an end and marked their first league loss under Maresca.
Nevertheless, the result did not immediately remove City from the top of the table. They remained three points clear of Arsenal, although the Gunners had a game in hand at the time of the match report.
For Maresca, the challenge will be to ensure that one defeat does not derail the progress made during the opening weeks of his tenure.
City had shown resilience by recovering from Jackson’s opener, but conceding again so soon after Haaland’s equaliser proved costly. Their attacking pressure also highlighted the importance of converting chances when opponents defend deep and protect a narrow lead.
Villa, meanwhile, will take confidence from a performance that combined defensive commitment with clinical finishing.
City Must Respond
Manchester City leave Villa Park with their winning streak over, but the season is still in its early stages.
Haaland continued his scoring form, and City created enough opportunities to suggest they could have taken something from the contest. However, individual mistakes and Villa’s effectiveness in front of goal ultimately decided the outcome.
Maresca’s side must now turn its attention to the next fixture and work towards a response.
The message from Villa Park is clear: possession and pressure count for little without the finishing and defensive concentration needed to turn performances into points.
